Renter-Friendly Balcony Makeover Under $300
· 11 finds
A balcony is the most under-used room in any rental. It’s usually a concrete slab, a railing and a view of the neighbour’s washing. It doesn’t take much to change that, and none of it needs a drill or your landlord’s blessing.
The core of this look is four things: a flatweave rug, two folding cane chairs, a small table and a string of solar lights. That gets you under $300 and gives you somewhere to drink a coffee that isn’t the couch. The rest is the finishing layer: cushions, a screen for privacy, an olive tree for the empty corner, a candle to keep the mozzies off.
Everything folds, rolls or unhooks. When you move, it goes in two boxes.
How to set it up
Start with the rug. Centre it, leave a border of concrete, and the balcony reads as a room immediately.
Zip-tie the bamboo screen to the railing on the side that faces the neighbours. Stick the adhesive hooks along the top rail, give them an hour, then run the festoon lights from hook to hook. The solar panel clips to the railing where it gets afternoon sun.
Chairs and table go in the corner that gets morning light. Cushions on, one each. The olive tree sits in the seagrass basket in the opposite corner; fluff the branches so it doesn’t look like it came out of a box.
Side table between the chairs, candle on it, done. Sit down.
