A Tropical Christmas Living Room on a Budget

Christmas in a hot climate doesn’t need snowmen. The trick is to keep the shapes of Christmas, a tree, a garland, stockings, lights, and swap the materials for ones that already live in the room: palm, cane, clay, linen.
This look is built around three layers. The first is the mantel or sideboard: a palm garland laid flat, fairy lights tucked inside so it glows at night, two cane lanterns at one end. The second is the tree: a rattan star on top, wood beads draped loosely, a dozen matte clay baubles in terracotta and sand. The third is texture: stripe cushions, linen stockings, a trio of ceramic trees.
Everything below is under $50, most of it well under. If you buy nothing else, buy the palm garland and the lights. The room will already feel like Christmas.
How to pull it together
Clear the mantel completely. Lay the palm garland first, then weave the fairy lights through it. Put the lanterns at one end with an LED pillar inside each, and set the timer so they come on at dusk.
Dress the tree with the star first, then the beads, then the baubles. Keep the baubles to two colours. If your tree is small, three dried palm spears in a floor vase beside it give it height without a second tree.
Hang the stockings from the mantel with removable hooks. Swap your everyday cushion covers for the stripes. Group the ceramic trees on the sideboard in a line, tallest at the back.
Two colours on top of your neutrals, terracotta and green. Everything else is cream, cane and warm light.
